Why would I want to live in the SLC Avenues?

The houses are old and expensive, the people are weird, the roads are narrow, and the houses are small. Why would I want to live in the Avenues in Salt Lake City? I actually had someone say that to me, almost word for word, recently. First, I should tell you that I live in the Avenues in Salt Lake City and I love it but I have found that there are many people that just don’t understand the appeal of this area. I’m going to take the next few paragraphs telling you what I love about the Avenues.

The Architecture

I remember taking an interior design class (yes, I took interior design and I liked it, too. It was in high school and I was one of two boys in a class with 30 girls) and the teacher gave us an assignment to find houses that represented each of the architectural styles that we had studied. She gave us a clue that you could find all of them in the Avenues in Salt Lake City. That was my first time going to the Aves (that’s what we local yokels call it). Little did I know that I would end up living there later.

I absolutely love that you can see beautifully restored Victorian, Italianate, Colonial, Federal, Tudor, and many more styles wonderfully represented in the Avenues. The people that live here tend to appreciate the architecture and try to keep its original charm.

The Trees

I love the old mature trees that line many of the streets in the SLC Avenues. Some of the oldest trees in the valley are found here. My favorite type of tree, the sycamore, is found in abundance here, particularly in Federal Heights, which is the next neighborhood to the east.

The Flavor

The Avenues has a different flavor than the rest of Utah. Eccentric people are irresistibly attracted here like the swallows of Capistrano. People here seem to be very well cultured and just plain interesting.

The Location

You can’t beat it. You are within walking distance of downtown Salt Lake City, you have the mountains in your backyard, you can walk through the most beautiful cemetery in the state, unbelievable views, pristine parks, and much more. This is one of the best locations in the Salt Lake Valley.

If you have any questions about the Avenues or you would like to tour some homes, please give me a call or send me an email.
